Fake Grass and Dogs

We recently replaced our backyard lawn with artificial grass and a putting green (hubby and son are avid golfers).

It looks awesome and we all love it!

We did this for several reasons:
1.  We don't have a sprinkler system and didn't want to install one.  We have water restrictions in our district so our real grass only looked nice for a few months in the spring and then died off to a dirt/dust bowl by July & August.
2.  We all have seasonal allergies and no one wanted to suffer through mowing the lawn.
3.  The dogs love to tear up the backyard with chase games and digging holes in the grass.
4.  We had some drainage issues during the rainy season and our stone patio needed to be redone anyway.

5.  I thought adding a putting green would be a nice social feature for the family - much like a swing set was when the kids were little.

6.  Bottom line we have a nice backyard and the grass wasn't very nice for all the above reasons.

We got several quotes and in the end went with Precision Greens.  They were not the cheapest but I liked their product and people better than the others.

This is not an endorsement for them just letting you know who we used and why.

The crew that did the install was great and when I reported a wrinkling problem a week later (install was done in cool weather and then we had sunny warm days)

They came out right away to fix it.  I mean right away and yes it was fixed!

However, it's not exactly what I expected so I thought I'd write a post on how this change has impacted our lives and the lives of our 2 dogs - Murphy 9 and Finn 1 1/2 both Wheaten Terriers.

I think I would have found something like this helpful when I was doing my research.  It probably would not have deterred us from doing this but I would have been more prepared.

First off, it's NOT "no maintenance" like I thought it would be.

We have some pretty big trees in our backyard - mostly cedars and maples.  There is stuff dropping down all the time.

You have to keep it clean - for looks also for durability.  It's important to remove the organic material so that it doesn't break down into the grass and then grow weeds or other plants.  I vacuum mine once a week with a Black & Decker Leaf Blower (attach Leaf Hog & Bag vacuum).

I talked to someone recently at a golf club event who actually uses his old Dyson to vacuum his turf!

I prefer to use the Black & Decker Leaf Hog because it will pick up large leaves and twigs and mulches it all into the bag.

I was told that you can use a shop vac or old vacuum but I had this old leaf blower with vacuum attachment and so I use this method for cleaning.

Also, Precision Greens does maintenance as often as you want it.  We've signed up for twice yearly fill and brushing with them.

Secondly, you need to clean up after your dog's #2s more diligently than if they were going on real grass.  I treat mine like carpet so when there's a #2 to clean up I pick up with the poop bags and then clean the area with a wet wipe (or wet paper towel) until clean.

I'll spare you the details - I don't think you need to see pics of that.

We had the special fill put in to help with the urine smell and so far so good.

But we are also working on re-training our dogs to do their business in the gardens rather than on the turf.  So far they will not go on the putting green turf but don't seem to mind the artificial grass (at least Finn does - Murphy likes to use the gardens now).

So in the end you might ask is it worth it?

Like I said it's NOT "no maintenance" it's just different maintenance than real grass.

I have to say for now - YES - it is worth it.  I don't mind the vacuuming and the picking up because I love the way backyard looks and how the turf feels.   I sit on it more so than the real grass and I'm considering doing yoga on it - not to mention all the fun we're having with the putting green.

I'll try and do an update post next year or next next year and let you know how it's going.

Until next time,
Marie

Master Bath Reno Update

I wish that I could show you some finished bathroom photos but sadly it's still not done.

It's been over 6 weeks since we started this reno and we are STILL waiting on shower glass (over 2 weeks since measure) and STILL waiting on window blind (to be installed on Friday, March 4).

UPDATE: I just had a call from the contractor today and apparently there was a warehouse glass accident and my shower glass was broken....we are aiming for the install to happen Thursday, March 3 now.

I'll post the final pics next weekend - I hope!

In the meantime, I have been busy with other projects like converting my closet doors...

Until next time...

First Bath...

Today I had my first bath in the renovated master bathroom.

I love this bath tub - the MAAX Lounge.

It's nice and deep and the back is angled perfectly.

I'm still waiting on the window blind to arrive so I've covered the glass with Glad Press 'n Seal.

It still lets in a lot of light but gives me the privacy I need to get naked in front of this new window.

Until next time...

Master Bath Reno Update - 5 weeks today!

Today is the 5 week mark for this master bathroom renovation.

The contractor and his helper, and the electrician arrived bright and early this morning (lol 9 am) and finished up what they had to do.

- trimmed and hung original door with new hardware
- finished installing bath tub
- replaced the noisy fan, defective fan switch and dead outlet
- installed the light fixture & mirror

All that is missing now is:
- the vanity panels & hardware (will be installed on Friday morning)
- the shower glass
- the window blind
- the towel bars

Here are the pics as of today.

Until next time...

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall - NOT!

You may have noticed in my previous post that my light fixture and mirror are not up yet.

I have had a hard time trying to find the right mirror for this bathroom reno.

Originally there was a builder's plate glass mirror in this space and I added a dark brown trim frame to it a few years ago during a "refresh".
If you want to know how to do this click HERE to see examples.

I didn't want to keep that mirror - the new vanity was going to be taller and that mirror wouldn't work.

Also I wanted something more stylish.

I thought that I had found the perfect mirror here (from Home Sense $199).

It was a heavy frame and the paint finish mimicked the floor tile (like driftwood).

I measured it so many times and it looked like it was going to be perfect...until the new vanity & countertop were installed.

The vanity turned out to be taller (35 1/2") than what I was expecting (34") so the mirror was 1/2 inch too tall.

Also, I wanted my light fixture to face down and the thick mirror frame (3" depth) was not going to clear the glass globes.

I considered getting another plate glass mirror but couldn't decide if it should be below the light fixture like this.

Include the light fixture like this (the shower glass company quoted me $225 for a mirror for my space).

Or go to the ceiling like this.

In the end, I found a mirror at Home Depot for $80.
It is the right size (taped it out on the wall) and the frame is thinner (depth) so I can have the light fixture the way I want it.

I know that the finish is not quite right (it's a warmer metallic) but I'm not afraid to paint it (to a cooler metallic) if it's too awful after I get it up.

 Until next time...

Light at the end of the tunnel...

I see light at the end of the tunnel but it's a really long tunnel and the light is pretty far away still...

When the contractor told me initially that this job could take 6 weeks I remember laughing and thinking there is no way this is going to take 6 weeks.

Maybe 4 weeks?

At the start, this reno was moving fast and then it slowed down a bit but was still on schedule.  I thought "wow we'll be finished soon".

Maybe 4 weeks?

Today is officially Week 4 of the Master Bathroom reno.

I was wrong...

It's going to take at least 6 weeks and then we will be waiting for "finishing touches".

Tiling Delays

The tiler has finished the shower wall tile and is grouting today.

But this has taken a few days longer than expected because
a) the tiler was tied up on another job and started 3 days late and
b) the handmade ceramic tile is not perfectly square (that's why we picked it) and it took much longer to install and work around the niche and
c) the sliced pebbles still need to be sealed.

The tiler has been here for 8 days now and probably will be here again tomorrow!

Before Grout
After Grout

Custom Cabinet Delay

The custom cabinet finishing pieces were supposed to be here tomorrow (Thursday Feb 11).  But they are now delayed until next week - a week later than scheduled.  I am told this is due to the dark colour we chose and the cabinet makers are really busy right now.

Shower Glass Delay

Because the tile is taking longer than expected, the shower glass site measure has been delayed a few days.  That delay puts off the shower glass finish to install date (usually 2 weeks from measure).

Window Blind Delay

This delay was caused by me.  I chose the blind colour without having the walls painted or the tile installed.  I had cold feet right after and decided that I wanted to wait until I had the other "colours" in the room before I finalized the blind colour.  Nancy is coming back on Friday morning to finalize the colour with me.

Brandon, the contractor, came by this morning and filled me on what will happen in the next few days - he's just waiting for the tiler to finish so he and his crew can come in and do some more work.

Good news - I may have a toilet by the weekend!!

Until next time...

Indecent Exposure...Not!

See that roof line out the window?

Well that's my neighbour's house and they have a second floor bedroom window that looks directly into our bathroom shower.
Something we suspected but didn't fully realize until we took out the glass blocks.

I've met with the Blind Lady (aka Nancy from Taylor Lauren Designs) and I'm going to be getting Hunter Douglas Silhouette powerview motorized blinds for this window.

They are battery operated and can be remote controlled.  We won't have a loose remote control in the bathroom - we lose the tv one all the time - so we'll wall mount ours.

Until next time...

Master Ensuite Reno Continues.....3 1/2 weeks

This past Wednesday was officially the 3-week mark for this master ensuite renovation.

This is what it looks like so far...

Floor is done & grouted

Shower niche (back wall) was tiled same as shower floor

I really love how the dark background (pre grout) makes the pebbles stand out.  Unfortunately, the grout I picked for the plank floor (and will use on the pebbles) is not as dark as I would have liked for the pebbles.  The tiler tells me that it will darken once he puts the stone enhancer on.

The shower walls are being tiled (to be finished Monday).
This took a lot of planning to make sure the niche is framed nicely and that the tile isn't too cut up into little pieces around it.

The cabinet boxes were installed yesterday (and the countertop suppliers came today to do a site measure for the quartz)

NOTE:  We ended up changing the wall paint colour to Cloverdale Paints Hearth CA045

Next week:
Tiling and Grouting continued/finished
Baseboards, door frame and window sill installed
Cabinet fronts and gables installed & hardware
Tub and Toilet installed (fingers crossed)
Shower glass site measure
Electrical finished and Lighting installed

I am having blinds installed on the big window over the tub and I'll post about that separately.

Sounds like a lot left to do still, but it will go fast now that the tiling is getting done.

Until next time...
Marie
